Downtown Martinsburg

Martinsburg’s downtown historic district is centered along Queen and King Streets—which intersect at a picturesque Town Square that serves as the city’s main public space for public gatherings and events, from the weekly farmers’ markets and summer Friday concert series to the Christmas tree lighting and New Year’s Apple Drop. Each of these community events is led by Main Street Martinsburg, a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to building and supporting a vibrant downtown core for Martinsburg.

This downtown core is home to many styles of architecture and opportunities for your business or residence. Storefronts at a variety of scales offer walkability, the draw of a historic downtown district, and the traditional “Main Street” form appreciated by generations of merchants and operators. Most buildings maintain commercial space on the street level with additional office or residential space above, and Martinsburg’s zoning ordinance is currently being updated to make this mixed-use approach to downtown property even easier to implement.

In addition to traditional storefronts, downtown Martinsburg boasts several architectural gems preserved from past uses and seeking new possibilities. These include the Union Sales building, the historic Market House, the “Old Federal Building,” and the stunning Martinsburg Roundhouse.
